My name is Alex Watson, and I’m a technology journalist and writer. This website aggregates some of the words I’ve written and pictures I’ve taken.
I work at Dennis Publishing, and currently I’m Group Editor of Custom PC and bit-tech.net. Custom PC is a UK-based performance PC hardware magazine and bit-tech is the UK’s leading website for high-end computer hardware, technology and games. I joined Dennis as a Staff Writer on Custom PC in the build up to its launch, and have been a key part of the team responsible for the magazine becoming one of Dennis Publishing’s most successful launches of recent years. When Dennis acquired bit-tech.net in 2008, I began working across both publications. Both CPC and bit-tech combine technical, authoritative reviews of PC hardware with longer features that focus on the wider and deeper changes technology is bringing to readers’ lives, and have established themselves as unique publications for PC enthusiasts and gamers. I’m also an occasional guest on BBC Radio 5 Live shows such as Up All Night, and have freelanced for the BBC website, and IT and technology magazines such as a PC Pro and Mac User.
I write a blog called The Wired Jester; it’s been online in various forms since 2004, allowing me to talk about books, the Far East, photography, creativity, music and the 1960s. My family moved around a lot while I was growing up, so although I was born near Manchester, I grew up in many places around the North West, and then the South East of the UK. When it was time to strike out on my own, I went and studied English Literature at York University, had a great time, made some terrific friends, and edited the student paper* for a while. Later on, I went to UEA in Norwich to study the MA in Creative Writing, although ’study’ is too dry a word for a marvellous year spent writing, reading and talking about books. Then I went to work at Dennis, and bought a house in South East London where I live with my partner and lots of computers and books.
